Scholarly Research

This guide contains information on researching common source types, using the library catalog, requesting interlibrary services, and more.

Find Unofficial Administrative Codes

For easier searching and browsing early in your research, you might use an unofficial administrative code on a legal research database. Remember to compare the text with an official version of the code to make sure it is both current and accurate.

Find Official Registers and Administrative Codes

Federal Register & Code of Federal Regulations

Enacted rules and regulations are published in the Federal Register (Fed. Reg.), which began its daily publication on March 14, 1936. These regulations are thereafter codified into the official federal administrative code, the Code of Federal Regulations (C.F.R.), which is published annually.

Register of Ohio & Ohio Administrative Code

When a rule or regulation is enacted in Ohio, it is first published in the Register of Ohio and is thereafter codified in the Ohio Administrative Code (Ohio Admin. Code). There is no official print version of the current Ohio Admin. Code. Instead, the Ohio Legislative Service Commission maintains an official version online.

Other State Administrative Materials

Use the following resources to help you find and compile state administrative materials:

Jurisdictions that have enacted the Uniform Electronic Legal Material Act (UELMA) may have their official administrative codes freely available online. Otherwise, you can try searching the Library Catalog. Note that administrative code naming conventions vary by state (e.g., Georgia Compiled Rules & Regulations, Hawaii Code of Rules).
