Legal Research and Writing Success

This guide features resources to help you succeed in LAW I & II as well as any advanced legal writing courses you may take at Moritz.

Ask Your Professor

First and foremost, if you are struggling on an assignment, start by contacting your professor or visiting their office hours. Since that professor will be the person grading the assignment, they are in the best position to provide guidance on how you can successfully complete it.

A Word of Caution

Before seeking any additional help, check your syllabus and confirm with your professor that you may do so. Under Article IV, Section B.2 of the Moritz College of Law Honor Code, a professor may prohibit students from seeking or receiving any "aid or assistance" on their coursework.

This restriction is particularly common in first year legal writing courses, where students are learning how to structure a piece of legal writing, how to self-assess their work, and how to incorporate and build upon their professor's feedback.

Ask A Librarian

Have a general question related to legal research, writing, or citation? The law librarians are happy to help. Although we cannot edit your work, we can provide advice on common issues and guide you to resources to help resolve more complex research and writing problems.

Visit the Reference Desk or find our contact information on the Ask A Librarian page.

In addition to the resources in this guide, we encourage students to explore the trainings, consultations, and other services provided by these Ohio State University departments:
